Autumn is just around the corner. The evenings will soon start drawing in, temperatures will fall and those long summer days will gradually become a distant memory. For anyone keen on keeping fit and healthy, it’s also a good time to think about adjusting your routine for the months ahead.
Summer naturally encourages us to be more active. We walk more, spend more time outdoors and generally find it easier to get moving. Autumn can be different. Darker mornings, wet evenings and cooler temperatures can make staying at home considerably more tempting.
That’s why establishing a good routine now can make such a difference.
Regular exercise isn’t just about appearance or fitness levels. Staying active can help improve strength, cardiovascular health, mobility and energy levels, while also supporting our general wellbeing.
As autumn arrives, try setting yourself a realistic weekly routine. You don’t necessarily need to train every day. Two or three good sessions each week, maintained consistently, can be far more beneficial than an ambitious programme that only lasts a fortnight.
At The Loft at Burnham (The LaB), we provide a relaxed, welcoming environment where you can train at your own pace.
Whether you prefer free weights, resistance machines, cardiovascular exercise, boxing or instructor-led classes, there are plenty of ways to keep your training varied.
Autumn is also a great opportunity to freshen up your fitness routine.
If you normally concentrate on cardio, why not introduce some resistance training? Strength training can help maintain muscle, improve functional fitness and support stronger bones.
Alternatively, joining a class can add structure and variety to your week – as well as providing that extra motivation to get through the door when it’s dark and raining outside!
For something different, our boxing sessions provide an enjoyable way to combine fitness, movement and technique. You don’t have to be an aspiring boxer either. Boxing-based exercise can provide a challenging full-body workout whatever your experience.
Physical activity and mental wellbeing go hand in hand, and maintaining a regular exercise routine can become particularly valuable as daylight hours decrease.
Your gym session can also provide something very simple but important: time for yourself.
Put the phone away, forget about work for an hour and concentrate on moving, training and feeling better.
And remember that recovery matters too. Give your body sufficient rest, stay hydrated and continue eating a balanced diet. Cooler weather doesn’t mean we suddenly need less water!
There’s no need to wait until January to make a fitness resolution.
September and October are actually ideal months to establish new habits. Start now and, by the time Christmas arrives, going to the gym could simply be part of your normal weekly routine.
At The Loft at Burnham, we’re proud to offer something a little different from the large commercial gym experience – a friendly, community-focused gym where people of different ages and fitness levels can feel comfortable.
So, as the leaves begin to fall and the evenings get darker, don’t let your fitness disappear with the summer sunshine.
Keep moving, stay consistent and make this autumn a healthy one at The LaB.
